Well first, the Essex Games is an exhilarating outdoor functional fitness and endurance competition that promises to test the limits of even the most seasoned athletes and we re proud to be a supporting partner! Location: at Watch House Farm, 1 Wash Road, Basildon SS15 4ER


The Essex Games brings together a diverse group of fitness enthusiasts, including CrossFit aficionados, military personnel, personal trainers, sports coaches, OCR athletes and hybrid athletes.


The Inception

Essex Games is the brain child of both Mike Linger (left) and Sam Raven (right). Their vision is to bring together people of all walks of life to challenge themselves, compete in "your own competition" and exceed their own expectations.

What to Expect at the Essex Games

Participants will face a series of challenging workout stations designed to push their physical and mental boundaries. The event includes activities such as:


  • 1km Rope Holding Run

  • 3km Bike Erg (shared with partner)

  • 1km Rope Holding Run

  • 100m Farmers Carry (shared with partner - males/mixed 2x24kg and females 2x16kg)

  • 1km Rope Holding Run

  • 2km Row Erg (shared with partner)

  • 1km Rope Holding Run

  • 100m Walking Lunges (shared with partner - males/mixed 2x20kg and females 2x10kg)

  • 1km Rope Holding Run

  • 50m Tyre Pull (shared with partner - males/mixed 100kg and females 75kg)

  • 1km Rope Holding Run

  • 100m Burpee Broad Jumps (shared with partner)

  • 1km Ski Erg (shared with partner)

  • 1km Rope Holding Run


Each station requires not only strength and endurance but also teamwork, as participants will share the workload with a partner.


How to Prepare for the Essex Games

Preparation is key to performing well and enjoying the experience. Here are some tips to help you get ready:


  1. Build Endurance: Incorporate long-distance running, cycling, and rowing into your training regimen. These activities will help you build the stamina needed for the event.

  2. Strength Training: Focus on compound movements like deadlifts, squats, and presses to build overall strength. Functional exercises such as farmers carries and tyre flips can also be beneficial.

  3. Practice the Movements: Familiarise yourself with the specific exercises you’ll encounter at the event. Practice rope holding runs, burpee broad jumps, and walking lunges to ensure you’re comfortable with the movements.

  4. Train with a Partner: Since the event involves teamwork, practice with your partner to develop a rhythm and strategy for each station.

  5. Nutrition and Hydration: Maintain a balanced diet rich in protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Stay hydrated, especially in the days leading up to the event.
